This has been frequently requested of me ever since my earlier post about ‘The Six Month Conversation’ resonated with so many people. This follow up is about the framework Alexis and I devised with hopes of guiding our life journey together independently and as a couple. I know this post is arriving several years late, after tons of requests, so thanks everybody for your patience!
Having attended about dozen events as a guest speaker / professional delegate since 2017 started, I've noticed a pattern that feels like it should be talked about: people do not ask for what they want and do not follow up properly.
I am reminded of this quote, which I first saw at 14 years old on a poster in my highschool hallway, and which I have tried to live by ever since: You miss 100% of the shots you don't take in life...
I've recently taken to finishing up notebooks with incomplete pages that are strewn about the home.
The notebook I am currently using to chronicle my dreams was one that I used sporadically throughout 2011-2014. In this journal, I found to-do list I'd written in 2012 while pondering and planning the future. Reading this today, in 2017, I am surprised by how many of these items I have actually completed.
Following my previous post about quotes that have inspired me along the way (up to Feb 18, 2016), I am putting together a new post with more quotes that I find myself relating to during my current walk of life. Will be adding to this post until it feels like it's time to draw a line in the sand again (Summer 2016 to ???).
Reading the commentary section in this 2015 Vancouver Sun article about public vs private competition of retail liquor stores in BC has left me absolutely livid. Between the exaltation of BC Liquor Store's supposedly efficient/effective business model and the cries of 'oh business is so bad, business people are evil', I couldn't stop myself from writing this rant post.
Note: this rant is entirely directed at wider social stigmas evidenced, rather than the specific people who wrote the linked posts/comments.
There are so many variations on 'Competition is good, so go compete!' (e.g. "Hard to believe that somehow private stores that pay mostly minimum wage and no benefits are struggling against government run stores that pay more than minimum wage and have benefits. // Good on the employees at the government stores for being so competitive. I have no trouble with the government stores being open on holidays/Sundays and having a cold section. This actually levels the playing field.") ARE YOU SERIOUS??
How about the jobs produced? How about supporting families?…
I (somewhat) recently attended Traction Conf 2016. The second day of this event opened with a fireside chat between Justin Kan of Y Combinator and Kristina Shen of Bessemer Ventures. The conversation was generally interesting and useful, but there was one specific idea that stood out to me the most:
The Shitty First Draft
The idea that one should put something out when it's reached a basically useful state (a.k.a. MVP), become motivated that it's in the public (ish) sphere, and continue to iterate upon this first draft to make progressive improvements.
